Welcome to The EcoSocialist, my personal website.
My name is Rob Dyer. I live in Durban, South Africa. Like socialists everywhere, I believe that socialism is the only way to rid society of poverty and suffering in the midst of obscene wealth.
I am also an environmentalist, believing that humans need to care for the entire natural environment. We need to preserve our planet for future generations.
I have made a point of learning about climate change, and what needs to be done to reverse it. As my understanding has grown, I have realized how much danger climate change holds for both the environment and for the future of civilized society.
Many socialist and left movements have adopted policies to combat climate change. But after failing to persuade a socialist group I was part of to take the issue seriously, I have realized that very few, if any, significant socialist parties and organizations understand what’s at stake.
Inspirational Fridays for Future protests
The Fridays for Future, or School Strike for Climate, which peaked in 2019, was truly inspirational. But the Covid pandemic, plus the realization of climate activists that governments were not listening to them, severely weakened the youth led protests. So far there has been no resurgence of mass based protests.
But I have little doubt that, as the crisis worsens, young people will rise up again in large numbers. The call for “system change” will grow louder.
The EcoSocialist aims to demonstrate to activists that the system that has to change is the capitalist system. And the only system that is capable of a rational response to the climate catastrophe is socialism.
The website also seeks to persuade socialists that the climate crisis will become a major focus of political and social upheaval, and new perspectives are needed.
